DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 335 pages. Publisher: Harper & Row
1973).Gerald Hawkins, author of “Stonehenge Decoded” and “Splendor in the Sky”
here explores many intriguing facets of the wisdom of ancient man. First he
tells about the astro-archaeological work done at Stonehenge itself, that
eighth wonder of the ancient world. Stonehenge is an architectural gem,
awesome, haunting, strangely beautiful. On the day of a summer solstice, his
group took pictures of the rising sun over the heel stone. Hawkins considers
just what it is that makes a civilization. Again he goes to make a study of
enormous ancient drawings in the Peruvian desert, those vast linear Nazca lines
which can be appreciated only from the air. Yet their makers could not have
seen them from the air. How and why were they made?
Hawkins and his associates made measurements and calculations, but came to the
conclusion that they are not oriented toward sun, moon, or stars. Their mystery
remains unsolved; gigantic lizard, spider, flower, monkey. The author explores
Machu Picchu and its temple. He reviews Heyerdahl’s theory of Kon-Tiki and the
passage to the Pacific islands from the west coast of South America. Hawkins
then explores the activities of the American Indian mound builders. Some of
those works are oriented toward the sun. He looks at Mayan ruins in Central
America.
Hawkins makes astro-surveys of the temples of the Nile, the Great Temple of
Karnak, the Temple of Amon-Ra, where the pharaoh made his sun observations, and
other temples. Hawkins’ assumption is that anything which shows today as
clearly astronomical was known in antiquity to the builders. He offers
perceptive speculations on how much longer our civilization will continue, and
digs into many legends and myths concerned with the ancient civilizations which
still have reference in the modern world. Illustrated with 60 photographs and
49 line drawings.
CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Lightly read hardcover with dustjacket in mylar sleeve.
Harper & Row (1973) 335 pages. Book appears to have been read once by someone
with a very "gentle touch". Other than very light evidence of having been read,
inside the pages are pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, and remain
very well bound. From the outside the book is clean and without major blemish.
There are very faint, very tiny tan-colored age speckles (known as "foxing") to
the top surface of closed page edges (visible only when book is closed, not to
individual pages, only to the mass of closed page edges, sometimes referred to
as the "page block"). The dustjacdket is encased in a well-worn mylar sleeve.
Beneath the sleeve the dustjacket shows a wee bit of edge wear, and someone
used cellophane tape to reinforce the edges of the dustjacket at both the spine
head and heel and along the edges leading to the spine head and heel. I have
seen libraries reinforce dustjacket edges with tape as a precuation, but this
is not an ex-library book - maybe someone got the idea from observing how
libraries reinforce dustjacket medges. The dustjacket is clean and presentable
with no tears or chips, though as a note each inside dustjacket flap corner has
been clipped (all four of them, both back and front inside flaps, both top and
bottom corners). Beneath the dustjacket the full cloth covers are clean and
evidence no significant shelfwear. Given the fact that the book has been
clearly read (albeit gently) and there is some faint foxing to the top surface
of the closed page edges the book might lack the "sex appeal" of a "shelf
trophy". Nonetheless for those not concerned with whether the book will or will
not enhance their social status or intellectual reputation, it is an otherwise
clean and only lightly read copy with "lots of miles left under the hood".

PUBLISHER REVIEW:
REVIEW: Hawkins takes readers on a whirlwind trip of the globe in search of
ancient astronomy and a scientific understanding of calendar-keeping.
PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS:
REVIEW: An amiable tour of sites associated with what the author calls
astro-arcaeology”, like Stonehenge, the Peruvian Nasca Lines, Machu Pichu, the
Mayan ruins, the Great Temple of Karnak, and other locations that demonstrate
early man's familiarity with the movements of the cosmos. 319 pages with
numerous figures, charts and half-tones, Appendix, Bibliography, Index and
Illustration Credits; plus Contents, Preface and Foreword.
REVIEW: The author of Stonehenge Decoded and Splendor in the Sky delves into
the aspects of ancient man's knowledge of the sun and stars. Includes
astro-Archaeological studies of ancient ruins: England's Stonehenge, Peruvian
Nasca lines, Machu Picchu, Nile temples. Fascinating theories, well
illustrated, an exciting read!
REVIEW: The Author of "Stonehenge Decoded" and "Splendor in the Sky" delves
into the many fascinating aspects of ancient man's knowledge of the Sun and the
Stars. Very informative, entertaining, though-provoking. Highly recommended!
READER REVIEWS:
REVIEW: Covers Stonehenge, Machu Piccu, mound builders in the US, Mayan ruins,
Temple of Karnak and more. Rare classic! Written by same great author as
Stonehenge Decoded”. Photos and drawings throughout. Author elaborates on
mystery of Stonehenge and then investigates other mysteries of the ancient
world including the enormous ancient drawings in the Peruvian desert, the Nasca
lines, Heyerdahl's theory of Kon-Tiki.
To go beyond is to explore into the mind of man at his earliest beginning. The
author delves into the many fascinating aspects of ancient man's knowledge of
the sun and the stars. Archaeological legacies/ ancient
civilizations/astro-archaeological work. Many black and white photos and
illustrations for author's speculations about the legends and myths of ancient
civilization.
REVIEW: “Beyond Stonehenge” is certain to arouse controversy, though not so
much as his groundbreaking previous study. He enters into greater detail about
the subtle ability indicated for the erection of Stonehenge, pointing out that
the structure is level, although built upon a sloping surface. He asks how did
the builders raise it in such a fashion as to compensate for the tilt, to
figure out beforehand what depth of hole would be required for the large stones
to match up with a collection of variable factors, and the survey proved that
this was done exactly! A formidable task for “primitive savages”.
Professor Hawkins applies the keys he devised from his studies of Stonehenge
to other ruined structures to ascertain whether they also show astronomical
knowledge on the part of their creators. He tries these keys in the “locks” of
remains at Callanish in the Outer Hebrides, in the Americas and Egypt. He
observes that the alignments of many antiquities scattered over the world
indicate remarkable similarities in basic understanding of astronomical data,
especially relating to positions of the sun at climactical times of the year,
to the moon, and to certain fixed stars such as Sirius, and to the
constellations Ursa Major and the Pleiades.
REVIEW: “The essential part of a civilization is perishable. It is finer than
dust. Culture itself is fragile. For man to be cultured, civilized, he must be
aware of time and its relentless flow. Then the past becomes a heritage to be
transmitted in myth, legend, and saga; the present comes in focus as the living
environment; the future is the great, unavoidable, hopefully controllable
unknown.” The works of prehistoric man are now in process of being re-evaluated.
New information about his capabilities results from the application of
astronomical data to archaeological remains, and aerial photographs also reveal
features hidden from view at ground level. The practice is not yet widespread,
but some recent publications stimulate increasing interest, despite the
resistance of “orthodox” archaeologists who remain hidebound in their own
narrow fields of research. Once more we see the need for a clearinghouse of
information, where the finds of one discipline may be pooled for examination
and reflection by specialists in other fields.
REVIEW: For a past year, Professor Hawkins - mathematician, astronomer,
archaeoastronomer, and author has let stand his challenge to an international
cadre of mathematicians, as well as to a quarter-million readers of Science
News, to come up with the Fifth Crop Circle Theorem he uncovered through his
studies of these incredible Formations. NO ONE successfully met his challenge.
This book explores Stonehenge, the mysterious structure that has haunted locals
and tourists alike for generations. Author delves into the many fascinating
aspects of ancient man's knowledge of the sun and stars. The astronomical
observations of ancient humans creates a pillar of civilizational
identification, according to the author.
I always ship books Media Mail in a padded mailer. This book is shipped FOR
FREE via USPS INSURED media mail (“book rate”). All domestic shipments and most
international shipments willinclude free USPS Delivery Confirmation (you might
be able to update the status of your shipment on-line at theUSPS Web Site
and free insurance coverage). A small percentage of
international shipments may require an additional fee for tracking and/or
delivery confirmation. If you are concerned about a little wear and tear to the
book in transit, I would suggest a boxed shipment - it is an extra $1.00.
Whether via padded mailer or box, we will give discounts for multiple
purchases. International orders are welcome, but shipping costs are
substantially higher.
Most international orders cost an additional $9.99 to $37.99 for an insured
shipment in a heavily padded mailer, and typicallyincludes some form of
rudimentary tracking and/or delivery confirmation (though for some countries,
this is only available at additional cost). There is also a discount program
which can cut postage costs by 50% to 75% if you’re buying about half-a-dozen
books or more (5 kilos+). Rates and available services vary a bit from country
to country. You can email or message me for a shipping cost quote, but I
assure you they are as reasonable as USPS rates allow, and if it turns out the
rate is too high for your pocketbook, we will cancel the sale at your request.
ADDITIONAL PURCHASES do receive a VERY LARGE discount, typically about $5 per
book (for each additional book after the first) so as to reward you for the
economies of combined shipping/insurance costs. Your purchase will ordinarily
be shipped within 48 hours of payment. We package as well as anyone in the
business, with lots of protective padding and containers.
All of our shipments are sent via insured mail so as to comply with PayPal
requirements. We do NOT recommend uninsured shipments, and expressly disclaim
any responsibility for the loss of an uninsured shipment. Unfortunately the
contents of parcels are easily “lost” or misdelivered by postal employees –
even in the USA. That’s why all of our domestic shipments (and most
international) shipmentsinclude a USPS delivery confirmation tag; or are
trackable or traceable, and all shipments (international and domestic) are
insured. We do offer U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail, Registered Mail, and
Express Mail for both international and domestic shipments, as well United
Parcel Service (UPS) and Federal Express (Fed-Ex). Please ask for a rate
quotation. We will accept whatever payment method you are most comfortable
with. If upon receipt of the item you are disappointed for any reason whatever,
I offer a no questions asked return policy. Send it back, I will give you a
complete refund of the purchase price (less our original shipping costs).
Most of the items I offer come from the collection of a family friend who
was active in the field of Archaeology for over forty years. However many of
the items also come from purchases I make in Eastern Europe, India, and from
the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean/Near East) from various institutions and
dealers. Though I have always had an interest in archaeology, my own academic
background was in sociology and cultural anthropology. After my retirement
however, I found myself drawn to archaeology as well. Aside from my own
personal collection, I have made extensive and frequent additions of my own via
purchases on Ebay (of course), as well as many purchases from both dealers and
institutions throughout the world - but especially in the Near East and in
Eastern Europe. I spend over half of my year out of the United States, and have
spent much of my life either in India or Eastern Europe. In fact much of what
we generate on Yahoo, Amazon and Ebay goes to support The Hermitage Museum in
St. Petersburg, as well as some other worthy institutions in Europe connected
with Anthropology and Archaeology.
I acquire some small but interesting collections overseas from time-to-time,
and have as well some duplicate items within my own collection which I
occasionally decide to part with. Though I have a collection of ancient coins
numbering in the tens of thousands, my primary interest is in ancient jewelry.
My wife also is an active participant in the "business" of antique and ancient
jewelry, and is from Russia. I would be happy to provide you with a
certificate/guarantee of authenticity for any item you purchase from me. There
is a $2 fee for mailing under separate cover. Whenever I am overseas I have
made arrangements for purchases to be shipped out via domestic mail. If I am in
the field, you may have to wait for a week or two for a COA to arrive via
international air mail. But you can be sure your purchase will arrive properly
packaged and promptly - even if I am absent. And when I am in a remote field
location with merely a notebook computer, at times I am not able to access my
email for a day or two, so be patient, I will always respond to every email.
