Third quarter 19th century. New York. Herter Brothers cabinet makers were
German cabinet makers who emigrated to this country from Germany in the
mid-19th century and quickly ascended to the pinnacle of cabinet making in New
York. The round top with exceptional marquetry inlays of the highest quality
featuring a central musical and arts motif set within an ebony rondel bordered
by repeating borders of exotic burl and figured veneers. The top is framed by a
circular molded edge above a molded and incise carved apron. The top is secured
to a central ring, spool and urn-turned central shaft which is supported by
four free standing hoof and tassel carved supports continuing to downward
sloping incised legs terminating in stylized paw feet. SIZE: 29-1/4" h x 20"
